LA MER - Leather Passport Wallet with Shibori Dye Fabric
Drawing it's inspiration from the sea, La Mer is a travel wallet featuring Shibori fabric. Shibori dyeing dates back to the 8th century in Japan and brings a classic look that only natural dyes can. Every piece is slightly different as we hand dye the fabric here in Portland, OR to give it a unique look.
This travel wallet is for the person meandering the world and wanting a connection to the sea. The vegetable tan leather offers elegance, and simplicity for travelers craving the raw beauty that the sea inspires.
La Mer simply means 'The Sea' in French. The look of our hand dyed shibori fabric reminded us of the look the Atlantic sometimes has in Biarritz in the French Basque Country. This piece came to life after we spent some time in the southwest of France on a recent visit. As we've said before, Shibori fabric dates back to the 8th century in Japan and refers to the process of shaping cloth before dyeing.
After experimenting with different types of bindings, we hand dye the fabrics here in Portland, OR on a sunny day (which are far and few).
The rest of the process is very much like all our travel wallets.
We cut. We punch. We sew. We clean. It may sound simple but each step takes time, patience and care. Especially since it's all handmade.
