What is Mud Cloth?
Mud Cloth is a direct translation from the Mali word bògòlanfini.
Bogo: “earth” or “mud".
The Malian cotton fabric traditionally dyed with fermented mud. The manufacture of this cloth is a long painstaking, laborious, process.
It has an important place in traditional Malian culture and has, more recently, become a symbol of Malian cultural identity. This ancient 12th century textile was originally considered a peasants cloth. Each pattern represents a different story and holds secrets that are passed down from mother to daughter. A reoccurring trend in these patterns offer variations of protection or safety.
Mud cloth can be washed in cold water without much color loss. However, as the dyes are natural and may wash out over time, dry cleaning is preferable.
